Your character or team reflect back on their pasts. What memory stands out to them the most, whether it be a good memory or a bad one?
For a long while, nobody said anything. There were no words in any of the languages they spoke to adequately express the mixture of shock, rage, loss, and indignation they felt. Only silence could do justice to the magnitude of this loss. Even as they sat in the same room together, they were isolated by an immeasurable grief that separated each from his fellows as surely as the void of space separated the moon from the sea, except the moon and the sea were at least within a measurable distance of one another. A man might travel in a space ship between the two. From where they sat currently, there was no discernible path or technology which might take them back home.
The silence was not an easy or comfortable one. It was uniquely unbearable, even painful. Every tiny sound seemed magnified a thousand-fold: the creak of a chair, the tick of a watch, the whisper of the air. It was the sort of silence that made your skin itch and granted an unnatural awareness of the weight of the clothes you wore and the sensation of breathing through your nose. For six of them, the mere act of swallowing sounded like an ocean wave crashing sharply on the drums of their ears. Only Daiyka and n’Barit, who did not possess the ability to salivate, were spared this cacophonous realization.
For Alden, the guilt of responsibility was overwhelming, but try as he might, he could not bring himself to utter even the smallest word of comfort to the others. It was probably for the best. His desire to apologize was as admirable as it was foolhardy. An apology would not undo the circumstances that had led them to their current situation, nor would it engender any forgiveness on the parts of his teammates. If anything, it might enrage them to a boiling point and shatter what little camaraderie they possessed.
Still, as he looked at Abernathy -- Erbium Knight -- Alden felt truly and wholly sorry. It was entirely his fault that Abernathy was with them on this trip. Alden could still recall their first meeting and the way Abernathy’s eyes had locked upon nearby objects, the walls, and the floor. Anything to avoid eye contact. The mere act of soliciting a handshake seemed to terrify Abernathy. Alden had felt an deep pang of sympathy for the shy teenager. It was at that exact moment he had decided to help Abernathy in any way possible, as if the sum total culmination of his purpose in becoming a knight was to help this one person.
There was a saying in the Quran: if anyone saves a life, it shall be as though he had saved the lives of all mankind. Having experienced both, Alden could say with certainty that the process of trying to save a single person had been far more rewarding than saving the world. Guiding Abernathy from nervous and defensive teenager to quiet and sensitive young man had filled Alden with a sense of pride and achievement and given him a purpose in life.
This situation forced him to question whether or not he ever should have gotten himself involved in Abernathy’s affairs at all. All the good he had done paled in comparison to the great injustice of stranding Abernathy as far from home as could be imagined.
At the end of the day, could Alden really say he had improved Abernathy’s life? Perhaps Abernathy would have overcome all that anxiety and reached the same level of interpersonal competency without Alden’s help, and done so without ever being separated from his home planet. As he looked at Abernathy now, Alden was glad that the young man’s eyes were fixed firmly into space instead of making eye contact.
Abernathy, for his part, wondered what he was supposed to be feeling at this precise moment in time. Emotions had never been his strong point. Growing up, he had felt like robot, mimicking the feelings and emotions of those around him without ever truly experiencing them. It wasn’t until he had become a knight that he had discovered any wealth of feeling within himself. Receiving the Erbium Pendant and transforming for the first time had changed everything. The way the magic tingled across his skin, the comforting feeling as the clothes of his fuku enveloped him, the slight and subtle shift in his perception of the world around him. If he had possessed the emotional and poetic sensibility, he would he likened it to returning to the womb.
In the days, weeks, and months that followed that momentous (and deeply mystifying) event, Abernathy had developed an acute case of emotions. The first and most enduring of those emotions was pain. It was the emotion from which all others had sprung, and it more than anything else characterized his time as an Atomic Knight.
Now, even pain seemed unimaginable. The events of the past few hours had completely overwhelmed him to the point where he was no longer aware of what he was feeling, or even if he was feeling anything at all. He willed himself in his innermost thoughts to connect to something -- anything -- but he found only hollow emptiness. His emotional system was completely shut down. He wondered if that was a bad or a good thing. Possibly it was too early to tell.
Of the eight of them, n’Barit Kinmera should have been the most well-prepared for this experience, because it was not the first time he had been separated from the planet he lived on, but he struggled in confusion as much as anyone. He had been living on Earth for some time now (even if he still didn’t understand their calendar system or day length and could not read or write any of their innumerable languages) and while it was not his home in the same sense it was everyone’s else’s home, it was the place where he lived, ate, and slept. There was an unbearable cosmic cruelty to the idea that he had now lost his connection to a second planet and had to acclimate to a third one. Maybe he’d get used to losing planets after he lost his fourth or fifth one. He wanted to croak in distress, but dared not display his suffering to the rest of the world. No one else, not even his guardian Daiyka, needed to know that he felt anything but contempt towards the Earth, or that losing it reminded him in any way of his loss of Yuul.
Even now, he could still see his homeplanet in his mind’s eye. He held it with him always. Some part of him never left that moment when he stood at the window of the ship that had borne him to Earth. He clung to the memory of his last glimpse of the tan and green planet he had known as home with a true ferocity, even as other memories of his world slipped away. So, too, did he remember the way it had looked upon his return so many years later. The tan and green planet had morphed into a world of brown and grey, like a rotted loaf of karra.
That left only Tanaka, known also as Hydrogen Knight, the so-called leader of the Atomic Knights. He had joined the diplomatic mission out of a sense of self-importance and a pathological need to have that importance reflected in the world around him. For some reason, despite his almost single-handedly saving the entire planet, his importance was largely overlooked by both the Knighthood and the world at large. No parades, no statues, no obedience from the other Knights. Sometimes he wondered why he had even bothered to save the world at all. If only he had the power to time travel. He could let the world be destroyed instead of saving it and show everyone exactly how important he was.
Though the four Atomic Knights and their four guardians were occupying the same physical space, there was no denying the truth. They were each of them, in their own way, completely alone.
Senshi Name: Nobelium Knight
Level: Basic
Special abilities: Medical knowledge.
Senshi Appearance: Nobelium wears a cream-color sleeveless tunic with a dark teal sailor collar and belt over black pants and a high-collared skintight sleeveless shirt. His collar is squarish rather than the traditional V and has a central-split high collar, with three white lines proceeding along the left and right sides of the collar around to the back, and three white lines at the collar as well. The collar also features a white square brooch in the middle. The back of the collar extends midway down his back and has a white square set in the middle of the bottom, on top of the three white lines. The underside of the collar is white with teal trim. His belt features a white rectangular buckle, and he has a glowing white square on his forehead. The bottom of the tunic has a very slight angled V shape and three white stripes as trim. There are two white loops at the tunic's arm holes. His shoulders are bare and dark teal fingerless opera-length gloves cover his arms. The gloves feature a flare at the top and are held in place by cream-color straps on his upper arm, near the armpit. The straps have white squares set on the outside. His gloves extend down to a cream-colored ring on his middle finger, leaving his palms and fingers bare. His pants are tight, made of a stretchy material, and disappear into cream-colored knee-high boots. The boots feature a folded over and split flap at the top with three white stripes facing outward. They are folded over teal-colored straps with white squares in the middle front. The toe of his boots feature a white square motif and the soles of his boots are teal in color.
Power Unification - This requires two other senshi to perform. Nobelium kneels down on one knee and two other senshi stand behind him with hands on Nobelium's shoulders. Nobelium calls out "Power Unification" and all three participants glow. The other two senshi can either call out powers of their own or simply provide their energy. The result is a combination of the attacks or energies contributed to the unification. If neither senshi called out a power, the result is a powerful energy beam that combines the essence of the two contributing senshi with Nobelium's. It's about 2.5 times more powerful than a regular attack. If one senshi calls out a power, the result is that the power is doubled in strength. If both senshi called out attacks, the result is a combination of the attacks used. Power Unification is not specific to the Knights and can be used with any other senshi.
Unity Link - Nobelium presses his hands to his head and calls out "Nobelium Unity Link." White beams of light shoot out to up to six targets and link their minds together. It links not only mental dialogue, but also thought and intent, essentially allowing all the participants to think and act as one and coordinate their actions. It works so long as all participants are within shouting range of Nobelium. Moving out of range will break the connection. Having six other minds is fairly draining on Nobelium, but he can manage four others without trouble.
Team Name: Atomic Knights
Level: Basic
Special abilities: Good with computers.
Senshi Appearance: Erbium wears a white tunic with black belt, black pants, and hooded cape. All the black elements feature a single line of white trim, while the white elements feature a single line of black trim. The base of the tunic is angled into a slight V shape and there are two black arm loops around the shoulders. The long, puffy sleeves of the tunic tuck into black cloth bracers covering his forearms. The bracers come to a V along the back of his hand. His hands themselves are uncovered. His belt features a design made of three horizontal diamonds: a central diamond in light blue color flanked by two smaller white diamonds set behind the blue one. His cape is pinned in place by a vertically-aligned light blue diamond set front and center and has two descending V shapes on either side. The cape extends down to his knees and has a reverse-V shape to it and features a light blue diamond at the peak of this V. The interior of the cape is white with black edges. His pants are baggy and tucked into white cloth spats that reach a pointed V on top of his feet. The boots underneath are black in the area of the heel, white in the area of the toe. The black turns to white in a V shape angled similarly to his spats. Lastly, he has a glowing white diamond shape on his forehead.
Attack Names and Descriptions:
Solo Barrier - Erbium Knight points his staff at a spot on the ground and shouts "Solo Barrier!" A white glow travels down his staff and turns into a fan of light that shoots towards the intended spot, striking the ground at a width of about twelve feet. A wall of white energy shoots up from the ground to a height of about eight to ten feet and a thickness of roughly four inches. It's essentially just a magic wall, glowy and white. It can block physical or energy attacks. It's slightly transparent, about 80% opaque. It can last up to five minutes or until Erbium powers it down. Erbium can make six or seven such barriers on a battlefield. Most of the time he creates them so they rise straight up, but they can be formed at any angle to the ground. They can intersect. Walls can also be formed on other walls. Erbium can arrange them to form complex structures. They can be used in conjunction with existing structures -- for example, to block off a hallway. If you look really, really close, you can see that the structure is made up of a tight lattice of tiny white diamonds.
Team Name: Atomic Knights
Senshi Of: Shields
Senshi Appearance: Chromium wears a white short-sleeved tunic over dark green long-sleeved turtleneck and baggy pants. His tunic is trimmed in gold, with red circles set on the outside of the sleeves and two gold-colored loops around his shoulders. Over his tunic he wears a circular cape with a high collar that covers the lower half of his face. The cape is dark green on the outside and white on the underside, with thick gold trim along the edges. The front of the cape forms a circular collar, with a red gem trimmed in gold set at the bottom. His turtleneck undershirt has thick gold trim as the cuffs with a large red circle atop his write. His hands are uncovered. He has a gold belt which is open in front, secured by two red gems with gold trim set on either side of his stomach. His pants are tucked into white boots with thick gold trim at the top and red circles in the front. The toes and soles of his boots are golden. He has a glowing white circle on his forehead.
Chromium Shield - Calling out his power, Chromium can conjure an energy shield, the exact dimensions of which can be modified as needed. By using the palm of his hand, he can create a lens-like shield with a diameter of up to ten feet at a distance of up to fifteen feet. (Think of it as if there is a cone emerging from his hand and intersecting with an imaginary bubble with Chromium Knight in the center.) The shield can be moved as he moves his hand and always orients so that it is protecting him. Using two palms allows Chromium to move the shield up to thirty feet away and orient it in any direction -- to protect a nearby ally, for example. By making a fist, he can make a shield bubble around himself with a diameter of ten feet, protecting himself and anyone inside it. When Chromium moves his shields, they adjust around any obstacles as if they were made of water, but they remain solid. This can be used for ancillary effects, such as pinning an enemy in place.
Chromium Armor - By touching his hand to the red gem on his chest, Chromium can conjure up golden armor which has physical and energy-resistance powers. He uses this when fighting in close combat.
Team Name: Atomic Knights
Senshi Of: Shields
Civilian Appearance: Standing only five-foot-five, Tanaka is a poster child for the Napoleon complex. He has warm light beige skin and dark, chocolate brown hair and eyes with thick eyebrows. He wears glasses with thick black frames and keeps his hair slicked back save for a few shorter strands. This makes his hair appear much shorter than it actually is. When his hair isn't slicked back, the bangs fall all the way to his eyes. He has a tendency to run his hands through his hair when stressed or nervous, so his hair frequently becomes unkempt. Though small in stature, he isn't particularly fit and has some extra padding, particularly around the middle. He wears suits and prefers red or blue ties, solid or with understated patterns. His face is often described as "intense," in large part because he is usually angry. He has a small mouth, but this does nothing to dampen the volume of his mouth when he shouts or lessen his ability to frown disapprovingly. He usually keeps a pad of paper and pen on him and likes to scribble math problems whenever he can.
Senshi Appearance: Hydrogen wears a brown tunic, gold sailor collar cape, gold belt, and tight white pants. His tunic has two white loops at the shoulder and long, jacket-style sleeves with two lines of white trim at the cuffs. A white chevron shape sits atop the trim on the outside of the sleeve. He has long golden cloves that cover his forearm beneath the sleeves. Two lines of white trim adorn the base of his tunic, which has an angled V shape. His belt is similarly angled into a V, with a large, white chevron-shaped buckle. His cape features a high split collar with two lines of white trim at the top which converge into single lines along the inner edge of the split, converge with a line of white trim that encircles the base of his neck, and finally converge into a single line which drops down towards a white chevron emblem set at the base of the front of his collar. Two lines of trim extend out from the emblem along the collar's bottom edge around back to his cape. His cape is thigh-length and flares at the hips, then cuts back to form a shallow V shape. There is a white chevron emblem on the back, set at the base of this V. The interior of the cape is white with gold trim. His pants are tucked into sleek golden boots. The boots have a V angle at the top and double lines of white trim. A white chevron shape sits at the base of this V on top of the trim. The trim extends down the front of the boots, then splits at the ankle, each line diverging to form an inverted V shape. The toe of the boots is brown in color and the soles are white.
Mass Bullet - Hydrogen can conjure small, palm-sized energy bullets at will and propel them through the air by flicking his hand in the direction he wants them to do. The "bullets" are small spheres of crackling brown and black energy that glow and have a black halo. They move so quickly, the spheres look like a streak of energy as they fly through the air. If they strike a person, it feels like being struck briefly by a taser. They can sometimes bounce if they strike a surface, but usually they just impact and embed into objects they strike. When they impact, they cause a small disc of energy to fly out to a radius of roughly ten inches, as if they've gone splat. It's possible to be zapped by the splat disc if you happen to near an impact site. They ignore clothing and most armor. The bullets are particularly effective against crystalline structures. When they strike something crystal, the impact is two to four time more potent. Hydrogen even has a technique where he can slide a bullet along a crystal, and it will increase in charge as it does so, potentially creating a bullet which is four to ten times stronger than usual. The crystal amplification is most effective on stone crystals, but it also works with ice. Conversely, the bullets are weakest against water, and they can be diffused by striking or passing through most liquids.
Mass Driver - Mass Driver is a power with a simple concept (Hydrogen can control a large object) but immense potential and it can be used in multiple ways. Full details here: Mass Driver
ALL COMMENTS ATTEMPTING TO CAUSE DRAMA/BRIGADE/TELL ME HOW HORRIBLE I AM/TROLL/BAIT FOR NEGATIVE REACTIONS/ETC WILL BE HIDDEN! It's really nothing personal, I just don't allow these sorts of comments on my gallery. ^^ Thank you and have a nice day!
Anywho, I really enjoyed reading this. Your story was very well put together and I got a great sense of who these guys are as individuals. I hope you enjoy playing with all of us at BSS - welcome!
Oddly enough, I think my female character, Peggy, might be able to become friends with some of these guys. She doesn't make friends easily, but she could bond with Abernathy over programming, and possibly even get along with Alden somewhat. It would be an interesting plotbunny to explore.
Here are my characters. Please check them out
